Quick start guide

This is a guide for students who want to join our PhD program, describing the steps to apply

Before you arrive:

Step 1: Go to the Research section of this website and select one or two research groups related to your area of interest.

Step 2: If possible, contact with the responsible or any other professor of the research group(s) selected. He/she can provide more precise information about the research topics for your Ph.D. Thesis.  He/she could be your tutoring professor if admitted to the program.

Step 3: Check if you fulfil the admission requirements for our PhD Program. Basically you need to hold a Bachelor or Graduate degree, and a Master degree in the area of ICT technologies.

Step 4: Go to the on-line Admission application web page  and register as new user. You should receive a registration e-mail.

Step 5: Use the on-line Admission web page to fill in your personal information, your academic degree(s) information and upload a CV and a scanned copy of your passport or personal ID card.

Step 6: Use the on-line Admission web form to create an application (use the Application Manager menu options):

      • Select Course Type: "Doctoral degree".
      • Click on the "Create application" button.
      • Select Name: "(YYYY-T) Signal Theory and Communications" where YYYY states for the year (2020, 2021, etc) and T could be 1 or 2, depending on the semester.
      • Fill in your motivation to apply for our Doctoral Program. Fill in the additional information section as well.
      • Click on the "Accept" button.
      • Use the "Add files" button to upload a scanned copy or your degree(s) certificate and your academic marks certificate(s). These documents are mandatory for the evaluation of your application.
      • Once completed, click the "Send request" button (you should receive a confimation e-mail).

Step 7: ONLY students coming from outside the European Space for Higher Education: check if you need to stamp the original of your official degree certificate to legalize it in Spain by following the instructions explained here.

Step 8: Your application will be evaluated by the Academic Committee of the PhD Program. Normally you should receive an answer in about one week after submitting your application. The evaluation process has two phases. In a first phase your application request will be validated (i.e. it will be checked that you fullfil the admission criteria). In a second phase, your academic records and current degree will be evaluated and you will be asked to enter either the training period or the reserach period of the doctoral program. During this phase you will be assigned to a tutoring professor and you will be optionally asked to complete some number of credits during the training period.

Step 9: If you want to apply to a grant, please visit the Scholarships section at the UPC Doctoral School web. Note that in some cases you will need to attach a certificate of the admission in our Doctoral Program to the grant application. You can request this document by sending an email to doctorat.tsc.utgcntic@upc.edu

Step 10: Foreign students should check if they need to apply for a Visa before arriving to Spain. Please, contact UPC International Students Service for all this issues.

VERY IMPORTANT: Don't forget to bring with you the original of your official degree certificate and a copy of all your qualification marks and academic records.

When you arrive: 

Step 1: Visit the UPC International Students Mobility Office (OMI)  to legalize your academic stage:

      • Students from the EU: you should register in the 'Registro de Extranjeros Comunitarios'
      • Students from outside the EU: Check your VISA situation at the OMI. You need to do this just after arriving to Spain if you hold a long duration student VISA.

Step 2: You can use the services provided by the International Students Service searching for an apartment or shared room in the city. They will assist you as well with other practical aspects such as Catalan and Spanish courses,  health insurance issues, etc.

Step 3: Admission (and therefore first registration) is always open. For students already enrolled in the program, yearly registration is carried out from around end September to middle October. Check the specific dates: https://utgcntic.upc.edu/ca/doctorat
